Explain six ways by which a citizen’s right can be safeguarded

The rights of citizens can be safeguarded
through any of the following ways:

  • A Free and Virile Press: The
press play a very powerful role in safeguarding the rights of
citizens. This is done through the constant monitoring of activities
of government that violate the rights of citizens and the publication of such
infringement can check the excesses of a government that
    is sensitive to public opinion.
  •  The existence of a free and
independent judiciary can also help to safeguard the rights of
citizens. The court can issue Writ of Habeas Corpus, Writ of Mandamus, Writ of
    Certiorari and Prohibition.
  •  Existence of separation of power
among the organs of government will also assist in
safeguarding the rights of the citizens. The Significance of this point lie in the fact that an organ can check the excesses of another organ.
  •  Establishment
    of   Ombudsman,   Public
Complaints Commission or Human Right Corn-mission as we have under the inglorious and wicked
Abacha regime -will assist in safeguarding the rights of
Citizens. But the effectiveness of this type of body is dependent on
the independence of such a body and the integrity of
    members.
  •  There should also be a constitutional provision dealing with rights of citizens. Such provision
must be made rigid so that the government of the day do not manipulate
it to suit her whims and caprices.
  •  The observance of the rule of
law will also help to safeguard the
rights of citizens in any state.
