What/when is the day of resurrection (Yawm al-Qiyamah )?

• Yawm al-Qiyamah means The Day of Resurrection; it is also known as The Day of Reckoning, The Hour — or less precisely,
• The Day of Judgment. Alternate spellings include Youm and Yaum.
• One might use the phrase in the following manner: “Allah will rise up on Yawm al-Qiyamah.” 

Yaum al-Qiyamah and the Afterlife

Islam teaches that on Yaum al-Qiyamah, all living things will be raised to life again and called in front of God for the final judgment in the Afterlife. People will be divided: Some will enter Jannah (paradise, the garden, or a place of physical and spiritual pleasure with delicious food and drink, virgin companions and lofty mansions). Some will enter Jahannam (hellfire), which is reserved for the “vilest of all creatures” and where “the pagans shall burn forever in the fire of hell.” Simply stated, on the day of Yaum al-Qiyamah, the dead are resurrected and given an afterlife according to the way they lived their lives while they were alive.

The Quran describes this Day as one of happiness for the believers and terror for those who disbelieved in its existence. The Quran emphasizes the power of God:

“Surely, He who brings life to the dead earth (through rainfall) can surely give life to men who are dead” (Quran 41:39).

 
The Steps of Yawm al-Qiyamah

On the day of judgment, we first hear the sound of trumpets — this is when all of life is annihilated. When the trumpets begin to blow a second time, Allah begins resurrection Then the graves open, and the judged gather and stand. Judgment and weighing of the deeds are given. Here, an angel on our right shoulder writes down our good deeds, and an angel on our left shoulder writes down our bad deeds. Allah weighs the book of deeds on a scale and determines our final destination.

Yawm al-Qiyamah and Islamic Eschatology

Islamic Eschatology is the branch of Islamic education that studies Yawm al-Qiyamah — the end of times. Islamic eschatology speaks of 10 major signs that will occur before the end of times. A few of those signs include three landslides — one in the East, one in the West and one in the Arabian Peninsula; the rising of the sun from its place of setting; and a fire that will drive people to their place of gathering for the determination of their final destination. Minor signs include widespread wealth and lack of need for charity, and the plague of Amwaas (a city in Palestine).
